Definition#
Allongé is a French ballet term meaning “elongated” or “stretched out”. It describes a movement in which a dancer extends their arms, legs or body to create a long, graceful and flowing line. In ballet, it is often used to describe the lengthening of the arms, particularly when transitioning between positions, helping to create an elegant and expressive appearance.
How to Perform Allongé (Ballet)#
To perform an allongé, begin in a ballet position with your arms rounded softly in front of your body. Slowly extend your arms outwards, lengthening your elbows, wrists and fingers to create a graceful, stretched line. Keep your shoulders relaxed and your arms gently elongated rather than stiff. Your fingers should follow the movement naturally, with your palms turning slightly as your arms open. The movement should be smooth and controlled, creating the impression of your arms reaching outwards and upwards. Remember to maintain good posture, keep your neck long and avoid lifting your shoulders towards your ears.
Tip: Think of reaching your fingertips away from your body to create a beautiful, elongated shape without losing the softness and elegance of ballet.
